I don’t know why Youtube showed recommendation video about the north and south korea to me who have been watching only comic show programs. I just had a look what it is( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AJUSIWSaQX4), and ended up facing with foreigner’s abnormal and blatant perspectives to the two Korea. The video was terrible. How could it compare those completely different societies like that? Just because they used to be one country? And how blatant editing it is that South korea society is always good and the North is not. The video looked like old fashioned novel that is talking about angel vs evil. Two Korea have been walking very different ways for 70 years. Right, It is so sad thing that one country was separated because of world powers, but it is true that they became two totally different societies, having different social structures, cultures, the way of living and different consciousness of people. During 70 years, they have experienced so different histories that have changed many aspects, and which makes it hard to compare two countries that simple. There are many North Korean defectors who have a hard time to adjust in South Korea society because of the difference of culture and discrimination. Some people who fail to adjust in the South try to go back to the North or choose to live another countries such as England and Canada as refugees, in a worst case they commit suicides. The video maker casted a defector to his video and showed how happy the defector is enjoying life in South Korea, which discloses blatant intention he wanted to show. Besides, the video maker seemed to pretend he was considering about Korea such as world’s justice protector, but his thoughts were very arrogant and too simple. He had sad and pitiful voice when talking about N.K, however he tried to show how exciting of living S.K, which made me cringe. What a creaky and cliche-ridden. The video showed foreigner’s typical sentimental perspectives to ‘the divided country’ which is seemingly unique. Another worst thing is Korean viewer’s reaction. I don’t understand their comments. They seemed very touched by the video. Almost Korean viewers said thank to him making this ‘good’ video. I know Korean tend to love foreigners who show interests to Korea. But didn’t they feel weird that they were compared with the North people like comparing twin? Didn’t they feel strange there was a wrong precondition of comparison? The title, ‘The only divided country in the world’, is best selling product of Korea in the world because many foreigners are interested in that issue due to the uniqueness. When Korean want to attract foreigner’s interest, they often use that title. Many cultural and arts topics for exporting to the world, Korean use that very well. When Korea tried to win the right to host 2018 winter Olympic in Pyeongchang, they kept emphasizing ‘the only divided country in the world’ and ‘for harmony and peace of the world’ I had some questions when I saw the promotion videos and presentations at first, ‘What does it have to do with the Olympics? Do they really think hosting Olympic is helpful to the divided country? Have they ever cared about the North and peace of the world?’ I am afraid if two Korea unified then we would lose this unique and attractive product.
